TeeFury Tagging 101: How to tag your designs for maximum visibility

You’ve signed up for TeeFury and are on the verge of uploading your artwork. Great! Now how are customers going to find your work?

Tags!

To make sure your artwork is seen by as many people as possible, optimize your tags! What exactly do we mean by that? Proper tagging will help bring your artwork to the top of the search results on TeeFury and in search engines like Google.

What are tags and why are they important?

Tags play a vital role in helping potential customers discover your artwork. Essentially, tags are descriptive words or phrases that you attach to your artwork to enhance visibility. When site visitors search or browse for different content themes on TeeFury or Google, these tags act as a bridge, connecting relevant designs with the users’ search queries. By incorporating appropriate and specific keywords in your tags, you significantly increase the likelihood of your designs appearing in search results whenever users search for those specific terms.

Selecting the perfect tags

The key to choosing effective tags lies in utilizing descriptive and relevant keywords that accurately depict your artwork. Consider the subject matter, style, medium, and any unique characteristics that distinguish your work. Most importantly, put yourself in the shoes of potential customers and contemplate the words and phrases they are likely to use when searching for products like yours. By aligning your tags with their search behavior, you greatly improve your chances of attracting their attention.

Tags to avoid

In recent times, we have noticed a surge in the use of superficial, misleading, and inauthentic tags. It's important to be aware that search engines like Google consider such tags spammy or even deceptive. Consequently, these tags are heavily penalized in search rankings, making it essential to steer clear of them. Here are some examples of tags to avoid: “best selling,” “top selling,” “trending,” “new design,” “new style,” “new product,” “cheap,” “hot sale,” “best price,” “best quality,” “money back,” “free shipping,” and “delivery guaranteed.”

By understanding the significance of tags and following best practices in choosing them, you can improve the discoverability of your TeeFury products and increase your chances of reaching potential customers who are searching for designs like yours.

The tagging do’s and don’ts

Do

  • Add a relevant and specific “Primary Tag.” Primary tags are weighted heavily in search. What one word (or phrase) would you absolutely need in order to describe your artwork? That’s your primary tag. For example, if your design features a narwhal and a lava lamp, your primary tag could be “narwhal.”
  • Use 5-10 total tags. “Other Tags” should be other keywords related to the design’s style, content, and theme. Using the narwhal example, some “other” tags might include lava, lamp, lava lamp, marine, sea creatures, 70s, cute.
  • Aim for mostly single word tags, but specific multi-word tags are fine.
  • STOP tagging when you run out of relevant words. More is not always better.
  • Check your spelling. Typos in your tags means your art may not be discovered.

Don’t

  • Don’t use vague tags (like “gift”).
  • Don’t use long, super-specific phrases (like “pastel kawaii narwhal 1970s lava lamp”).
  • Don’t use unrelated buzzwords of any kind!
  • Don’t add redundant tags. Repeating the same word will hurt your search results. For example, if you tagged a design with “cat” don’t also tag it with “cats” or “kitty cat.” Instead, aim for variety.
  • Don’t use full sentences.
  • Don’t include the product type (t-shirt, hoodie, tank top, etc.).

Happy tagging!
